Research is the starting point for many of The Office’s films, installations and collaborations.
The studio combines documentary observation, long-term fieldwork, participatory methods and technological investigation to examine how large political, technological and environmental systems become visible through everyday life.
01
Technology, territory & infrastructure
How technological and infrastructural systems reorganize landscapes, resources and political life.
Current research examines data infrastructure, territorial control, digital economies and the material systems underlying emerging technologies.
02
Documentary, evidence & simulation
How documentary images function as evidence in an increasingly mediated and synthetic visual environment.
The Office explores observation, reenactment, testimony, simulation and other nonfiction strategies for representing realities that are politically contested or difficult to make visible.
03
Ecology & computational systems
Research into the relationship between computational infrastructure and ecological systems — particularly water, sensing, energy, data and environmental governance.
The work asks how infrastructures that often remain invisible can be experienced, documented and understood through film, sound and interdisciplinary research.
04
Participation, memory & place
How collaborative and participatory forms can document memory, displacement and relationships to territory.
Projects combine testimony, performance, spatial documentation and community-based methodologies to create forms of nonfiction that move beyond conventional observation.
Current research
Beneath a Hundred Streams
An ongoing documentary and research project investigating rivers, artificial intelligence, data infrastructure, environmental sensing and ecological governance.
The project examines how the physical infrastructures underlying computation intersect with water systems and the communities and ecosystems surrounding them.
